Usher's Best Dance Crew

Thursday night six crews took to the stage on a lot at MTV for this weeks, “America’s Best Dance Crew Challenge”.  The king of R&B himself, [lastfm]Usher[/lastfm] doled out the musical assignments for each of them via video and then the stage got real sexy.    Hailing from the “A” ,it was only fitting that

The crew from his home area kick off the competition.  Jungle Boogie has been KILLING it the last few episodes.  I mean I have always liked the swagger of this crew but the continuously take their moves and their vibe along with their choreo to the next level on the regular.  This week their task was to take on some “gliding”.  The knee glides were most impressive and the definitely made big moves as they held it down for the only remaining crew to rep the south region.

Back on top this week was Poreotix!  They had Usher & [lastfm]Lil’ Jon [/lastfm], “Yeah” and literally brought the club to the stage!  It was non-stop, action, tricks, and male booty shakin’!

Saltare was the one who had their banner fall, but I really have to give it to them.  They went hard before they went home and I respect that.  They proved they had the moves with and without the jump-ropes, but mostly with.  This crew was themselves and made no apologies for it.  The tricks they did this week for the fighting of the video, “Caught Up” left me speechless (that’s not an easy task, I talk for a living damn it.

Going up against BluPrint Crew I was worried from jump, the other group had earned immunity two weeks prior and even though the crew isn’t technically from the USA they usually come with moves that would earn them immunity regularly if that were a part of the show.

Next week?  I’m going to call it right now.  Hype 5-0.  I love the heart of this crew, but I believe that they can no longer reach the bar of the crews they are currently competing with.  If  Saltare hadn’t had two weeks in a row prior that had stunts with mistakes, it would have been our islanders that we bid farewell to.

Aboout the Judges: [lastfm]Omarion[/lastfm] has gotten a little easier on the crews as the weeks go by.  [lastfm]Lil’ Mama[/lastfm] cracks me up no matter what her critique is.  Did you see [lastfm]JC Chasez[/lastfm] flirting with that girl from Bluprint?  I mean wow, she’s a youngin’, don’t be looking at her like that!

Alicia Keys vs. Beyonce

Beyonce and Alicia Keys joined forces for the first time live for their song, “Put it in a love Song“!

I hear this debate all the time? Who can sing Better? Who is more talented? You Decide? Why can’t we like them both?

On A Positive Note is good to see 2 black women come together despite them being competition!

 My Choice…Sorry I’m a B Stan for Life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"This Too Shall Pass" - badass music videos in the post-video age

Sure, the song title is Jewish…but we’re not really talking about anything Jewish, just a heads-up. Though it is interesting that the name of OK Go’s newest hit song is a popular Jewish phrase (often inscribed on jewelry, such as Yeshiva Girls rings), I could not find any relationship between the song/band and Judaism.

So let’s instead talk about badass music videos, which “This Too Shall Pass” certainly is. We’re gearing up over here for the Washington Jewish Music Festival, and though we certainly listen to some terrific music, we definitely don’t see any music videos! These videos used to be prime advertising opportunities for musicians and  bands – see a cool video, buy the CD, right?

But since CD sales are down, pirated music is so easily accessible, and even legal, purchase of MP3s is also so easy, nobody wants to make the  videos anymore. But we still want to see them, even if MTV disagrees (noted by their official dropping of “Music Televison” from their network description).

Even if musicians don’t have MTV to showcase their awesome videos, thanks to this whole internet evolution, they have YouTube, Vevo, and the ability to go crazy viral. OK Go created the video for “Here It Goes Again” independently of their record label (which they have since left). With little more than four  treadmills, a camera, tripod and killer choreography, they created a web phenomenon – and probably a whole new fan base.

But some artists want to make their videos with some more money, which is fine too, if they have it. Lady Gaga’s new music video for “Telephone,” featuring Beyonce, is completely ridiculous…but I can’t stop watching it! The costumes, the storyline…the song, meh, not so much. But give me a telephone hat and glasses made out of cigarettes, and I’m on board!

So what’s my point? Nothing huge…I just want you to watch these music videos! Explore the internet, and find those videos that speak to you…dig out those old videos that were so fun to watch 15 years ago. I’m sure you’ll discover that music videos are a form of entertainment you have seriously been missing in your life.

And then don’t forget to check out the Washington Jewish Music Festival on June 6-13 (line-up to be announced soon!). Maybe you can talk our bands into creating some viral videos for your viewing pleasure.

MTV's "16 And Pregnant" To Change To More Accurate Title "16 And A Slutty, Trampy Whore"

Viacom, the parent company of MTV Networks, announced that they will be changing the title of the popular series “16 And Pregnant” to a more accurate title of “16 And A Slutty, Trampy Whore.”  The network perhaps realized that kids need to understand that kids shouldn’t be having kids like the whores and white trash guys  they watch on television.  Condoms and other birth control methods should be brainwashed into the brains of the teen viewers watching the reality show.  The new title and format will introduce abstinence by couples that shouldn’t reproduce at all because of their horrible physical appearance.  Bringing an “ugly” child into this world shouldn’t be something that the show should encourage because these fat, ugly, or both couples should know that from their own persona experience.  The title will take effect next season.

A Michael Jackson Story

A Michael Jackson Story
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gianni_Truvianni]Gianni Truvianni

I for my part have never been much of a fan of what is commonly referred to as “pop music” or “rock music” but it was one day with time to spare that I bought a book about the hard rock group “Van Halen” that I read the following story.

Michael Jackson recorded a song called “Beat It” which was quit a big hit back in the early 80s specially on MTV, which was relatively new at the time. It was this particular song which featured a guitar solo by Dutch born guitarist “Edward Van Halen”; who also lent his name to the band I was reading about at the time.

In the USA, rightly or wrongly; depending on one’s point of view which I will not comment on as this is not the reason I am writing this article but to mention a fact; there are radio stations which will not play any music by nonwhite artists or at least such was the case at the time of the release of the “Thriller” album. This the album on which the song “Beat It” first came out on.

Concerning the racial issue however it was not something I found out about in this “Van Halen” book; as this I knew before hand yet what I did find out was that many of these radio stations which would not play songs by black artist actually played the song “Beat It”. This in a strange fashion however, given they would limit themselves to only playing the guitar solo which is done by Edward Van Halen; a white guitar player.

It was also in this book that I read with regards to the “Beat It” solo which many consider to be the best part of the song; that Edward Van Halen stated that he was never paid or received any royalties from it, though his efforts are mentioned in the album’s credits. Van Halen is also said to have been asked to be in the video which would be played almost nonstop on MTV yet refused to appear, claiming he did not feel the song would be a hit which apparently it was.

My name is Gianni Truvianni, I am an author who writes with the simple aim of sharing his ideas, thoughts and so much more of what I am with those who are interested in perhaps reading something new. I also am the author of the book entitled New York’s Opera Society which is now available on Amazon.

Transvision Vamp

I’m digging real deep into my Obscure Vault of Forgotten Music, am opening up the “Who the Hell is that Group?” file, and am pulling out the video for the great “Transvision Vamp“.

I wonder if anyone here in the US ever even heard of this group….

I heard them while living in England and really liked the song “I Want Your Love“.

Transvision Vamp was a British Alternative Rock Band led by lead singer Wendy James.

Between 1987 and 1991, the group charted 7 hits onto the British Top-40 Charts.

As far as I can tell, they never charted any songs on any US Charts.

Oh well, at least this might bring back fond memories for the millions of faithful readers that I have in the United Kingdom and throughout Europe….

MTV Ignites With Rebrand and Fresh Idents

Europe: MTV’s world design studio in Milan (MTV International) builds on its branding campaign last year by rebranding 6 of its genre-based channels in the UK: MTV Dance, MTV Hits, MTV Rocks, MTV Shows, MTV Base, and MTV Classics. The over-arching campaign includes name changes, new idents, and refreshed logos.

MTV2 will now become MTV Rocks, VH1 Classic will be MTV Classic and MTVR becomes MTV Shows. Base, Dance and Hits will keep their name but will undergo the visual rebranding.

Roberto Bagatti, creative director of MTV’s world design studio explains the design philosophy, “The idea is to promote healthy collaboration between the world’s best motion design talent, whether they are established or straight out of school and wet behind the ears.”

With regards to MTV’s current brand evolution Bagatti adds, “Over time this will allow MTV International to grow and evolve our idents into what could be the best body of international motion design work associated with one brand”.

Here’s a preview of a few more of the new idents for those outside of the UK (click for more). MTV Dance Idents were designed by Paris-based View. MTV Rocks Idents were developed by Amsterdam-based Post Panic.

Scene model Zui Suicide gives me a shout out.

The beautiful and talented Zui Suicide (pronounced ‘ZOO’ not ‘ZWEE’), real name Lauren Watts and I became friends about a little more than a year ago. Having been on various tattoo magazines, tabloids, and the first person you think of when you think of “Suicide Girls.” No, SuicideGirls.com is not a site for girls to harm or think about harming themselves, it’s a movement specifically for girls who dress and look “scene” or “alternative”, a branch off of “emo”, yet with bright and vibrant colors instead of pure black. She captures this look like nobody else and that has set her apart from the rest of the trend following pack.

I first discovered her, not really through the internet as she became well known (her Myspace boasts over fifty thousand friends), but through the MTV reality show of Paris Hilton “Paris Hilton’s My New BFF”, where contestants that were mostly made up by females, did various tasks and all lived together in one house to try and win the title of Paris’ best friend forever.

Lauren was well liked in the house and got along with everybody being the friendly and open person she is, but being holed up in one confined area with different personalities was bound to create tension with one other girl in the house. Ultimately Lauren was “voted off” the show but not without making her presence known and still forming lasting bonds with Paris among others even though the outcome wasn’t her “winning.”

I then started talking with her via Myspace and AOL instant messenger about the show, Paris Hilton herself and various other contestants as well as personal non work related topics, and we quickly became friends. An avid traveler like myself, and other things in common, we always seem to have things to talk about. Her upbeat and witty sense of humor mixed with words she starts as trends is truly comical and always seems to like to make people laugh.

Once in a while she’ll do special cam shows in which she posts the schedule on her Facebook page, and her and gal pal Lana Fleming were really sweet to include me in it as well. If you’d like to book her for a shoot, commercial, show or video, you can contact her via her page which is located under my Sources section on the right hand column. She does NOT have a Twitter account, only a Myspace & Facebook which are: Here & Here

Lauren is currently newly married and resides in Virginia with her daughter.

Freakin' Laser-beams

Freakin’ Laser-beams

Can you remember the compact cassette or for that matter, the gramophone record most commonly known as the LP.

I can.

I still remember listening to little red riding hood and hansel und grettel, while watching the black disk go round and round. slightly tilting as it turned. I still remember pressing the RPM button making the voices sound squeaky and funny.  You had to be vary careful with them or else the record would start skipping or repeating. Listening to children’s hear-plays while driving to our holiday destination by means of a state of the art cassette player with auto-reverse. Later I used my sisters old radio cassette recorder to tape songs I particularly liked. Or loaded games on  my Phillips MSX1  taking sometimes over 15minutes to load snake.  And If you where unlucky you’d have to restart because there was some dust in the system. Those where the days.

Last year when I was building a DVD about my sisters life as a gift to her wedding, I listened to some of the old tapes.  The quality had deteriorated but still it was pure nostalgia. I still have my MSX and the original DAT recorder in a box somewhere on my attic and will probably stay there until my kids will sell them. Hopefully for a phenomenal amount of money because of the age of the system.

And then in 1983, March the second there it was.  It was the era of the space shuttle, Michael Jackson and live Aid, MTV Launched, the age of Pac-Man and the Rubik’s. People where hoping to a future. rumors heralding the end of the Cold war. The Era of the colored blazer and wristbands. Back to the future , Indiana Jones, E.T something was changing. Star wars and star trek. Things that could be. Blazing across the galaxy with light swords and lasers.

Lasers.

Using bundled light had just found practical appliance. And then there it was. It was the Dutch company Phillips who came with a new invention which we know now has revolutionized the many industries. It was round and silver(or gold) about the size of a beer mat and made out of a few layers of plastic. A marvel of science. Little did we know then that that little shiny disc would revolutionize the way we store and move around data.It stored data by means of a laser that burned little holes in a layer and then could be read by interpreting the holes with a less powerful one. The laser had finally gotten it’s practical use in society.

Of course I am talking about the Compact Disc. More commonly know as the CD. this week 27 years ago  it was new. And it hit like a bomb. This was the answer to the LP who needed to be handled with care. The answer to the tape it a shiny disc with many times the capacity of a diskette a cassette or an LP all together. It was marvelous. This was the medium that would replace them all.

Funny enough it seemed like it would. But nowadays you see an increase again in the usage of LP. Mainly because of its authentic analogue sound. With CD there is always a loss of sound even though it is impossible to hear for the untrained ear. The LP just gives off a warmer sound. That is why many audiophiles don’t want anything other then a record player with a tube amplifier. ( another subject for post here perhaps) The CD did not replace the tape. It is still widely used in the IT industry as a backup medium in a many more potent form.  The diskette has almost vanished not to because of the rise of the CD but because of a newer appliance called the USB-Storage device.  Still CD’s are widely used worldwide. As the carrier of music or data. Or if they are damaged as a beer mat.  Nowadays a newer variant is also used the DVD which holds even more data.

But still the CD has changed the music industry and for that matter the world. It has made things more accesible and more mobile then before. I still, everyday. Enjoy the marvels of this invention as I practice for this years Global Jam. Listening to the music in my car stereo and I can hardly remember what the world  looked like without them.

16&P: Don't rely on your partner when it comes to contraception

Last night’s 16 and Pregnant highlighted the importance of personal responsibility when it comes to contraception, as both sexual partners need to make sure they have protected themselves and aren’t relying on their partner to do so for them.

Fifteen-year-old Valerie had unprotected sex with her boyfriend, Matt, who is older and “more experienced” than she is. She got pregnant, he decided he didn’t want to have any communication with her unless it was about the baby, she contemplated just cutting him out of the picture, in the end he moved 200 miles away to look for a full-time job and seems to want to help support Valerie and Nevaeh.

Lots and lots of these girls have had sex education, their friends ask “What were you thinking?” and they simply shrug their shoulders and say they weren’t. Valerie’s friend Sienna asked why she didn’t use condoms and Valerie just said that she was stupid and relied on Matt to provide the contraception because he was older and more “experienced.”

I immediately wondered if she had even thought about his “experience” and the fact that he could be passing some sexually transmitted infection like herpes or HIV thanks to all his sexual experience, but there’s another important problem this action highlights: These girls obviously know what a condom is, they know its purpose, but in Valerie’s case she simply disregarded what a teacher said in favor of what her boyfriend did or said.

Birth control is something that you cannot assume your partner is going to take care of. More than stories of women, I’ve heard stories of men who are shocked when their female sexual partners get pregnant, all along assuming that she was taking some sort of birth control. This is the excuse Seth Rogan’s character gives in the movie Knocked Up when trying to make excuses for not wearing a condom.

You are responsible for yourself, and if you are in no way protecting yourself from STIs or an unplanned pregnancy, then you are equally responsible for the consequences. Just because a guy says he is clean, says he will pull out, says whatever he wants to avoid wearing a condom, doesn’t mean that you can’t insist on a condom and refuse to have sex without one.

If I had to guess, I’m sure Valerie reasoned that Matt hadn’t ever gotten anyone pregnant before with his condom-free method, so he must know what he’s doing. I’m sure it also had to do with the power dynamic of an inexperienced 15-year-old girl who wants attention from an older guy and will likely follow his lead to keep that attention.

From this episode, I hope that women (teenage and adult alike) learn that personal responsibility is key — it’s your body, and you can better control what happens to it when you take precautions and look out for yourself, rather than relying on someone else to do so.

I hope women also learn that scientific facts trump experience or inexperience — unprotected sex leads to higher risks for pregnancy, as nothing is stopping than sperm from fertilizing that egg. It doesn’t matter if the guy is an “expert,” if you’re a novice, or if he’s just older than you are — stick with the facts because talk is cheap, and babies are expensive.

Buffalo Chicken Mac 'n Cheese!

I don’t remember exactly how I found this recipe, but on the last snow day, I wound up perusing Yum Sugar’s site, and one of their posts about macaroni and cheese. They had quite a few different types, but one really stuck out. As a spicy anything lover, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to make the Buffalo Chicken Mac ‘n Cheese.

Since my fiancé and I had a busy weekend, we decided to be daring and tackle the recipe during the week. Monday night was filled with a trip to the gym, dropping off our rent, stopping at the grocery store for some forgotten spices, coupled with me dying from my typical intestinal issues. That’s neither here nor there. The important fact is that I got to make it Tuesday.

I usually try to stay away from recipes that require more than minimal work during the week. So that means less than a 20 minute cook time with minimal prep. We’re big fans of the Bertolli spinach & ricotta tortellini because it’s ready in 10 minutes and absolutely delicious. But knowing we need to expand our week night horizons, I thought this would be an excellent choice. Plus, Tuesdays are always so bland. We both work for a software development company in the time & attendance / payroll industry, and everyone likes to process payroll Tuesdays. So we’re always busy, plus there isn’t any good TV (though MTV’s 16 & Pregnant is becoming increasingly interesting).

Back to the task at hand – the making and devouring of the Buffalo Chicken Mac ‘n Cheese.

There were A LOT of little steps to get this guy going. First, I needed bread and cook the chicken and put it aside. I also needed to make the macaroni, pretty much at the same time, to ensure there wasn’t a lot of lag time between. Then I needed to make the onion, garlic and milk mixture. My stove top could barely handle the pressure!

Those were really the only tedious parts; mixing all of the cheese and then the final ingredients together was easy. Like always, waiting was torture because I am one of the most impatient, anxious, and ADHD people around. Thankfully my fiancé is the same way, so we manage to entertain each other. Usually ridiculously.

Now this is NOT the type of recipe to make if you’re on a diet, if you’ve already eaten a lot of calories for the day, etc. Of course no mac ‘n cheese is “good for you.” But I’m yet to meet someone that doesn’t love it, so it’s worth it! This particular recipe has a ton of butter, milk, and cheese, and all things wonderfully fatty. But after running a solid 4.5 miles, a nice mile and a half over the training that was required for the day and in a decent time, the indulgence was only appropriate.

Because the recipe has so many heavy ingredients, you really don’t need to have much. Pair it with a simple green salad, and you’ll be good to go!

You’ll find the recipe below. It makes 12 servings. I actually cut it down so it was only a third of the 12 servings, and there was definitely enough for 3-4 people.

Thanks again to my wonderful fiance for the great pictures! You can check out more of his other pictures over at his blog; I Hate Fun.

Buffalo Chicken Mac ‘n Cheese

Ingredients:
2 cups unseasoned breadcrumbs
1-1/2 tablespoons cayenne pepper
1-1/2 tablespoons ground cumin
Sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
3 large eggs
1 pound chicken cutlets
6 tablespoons canola oil, plus more as needed
1 pound elbow macaroni
8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, divided
3 cups chopped onions
2 large garlic cloves, chopped
1/2 cup all purpose flour
4 cups whole milk
1 cup grated jack cheese
1 cup grated extra sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup creamy and crumbly blue cheese (recommended: Maytag Blue), crumbled, plus more for garnish, if desired
2 teaspoons paprika
1 cup Frank’s RedHot Original or other hot pepper sauce
1 stalk celery, finely diced

Directions:
1. In a medium bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, salt, cumin, cayenne, and pepper. Beat eggs in a shallow bowl. Coat chicken pieces with the breadcrumbs, dip in the eggs, then coat again with the breadcrumbs; place on a plate. Repeat with the remaining chicken.
2. In a large, heavy skillet, heat 1/4 cup canola oil over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add two of the chicken tenders and cook, turning once, until golden, about 3 minutes. Repeat with the remaining chicken, adding more oil if necessary. Using a slotted spoon, transfer cooked chicken to paper towels to drain. Cut into 1-inch pieces; set aside.
3. Cook macaroni in a large pot of boiling salted water until pasta is tender but not quite cooked through, about 6 minutes. Drain; transfer to very large bowl.
4. Melt 6 tablespoons butter in same large pot over medium heat. Add chopped onions and garlic. Cover; sauté until onions are soft but not brown, stirring often, about 6 minutes. Add flour; stir 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk. Bring to boil, whisking frequently. Reduce heat and simmer sauce 2 minutes. Add all cheeses, paprika, 1 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon pepper. Whisk until cheeses melt and sauce is smooth, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Season to taste with more salt and pepper, if needed. Mix cheese sauce into macaroni. Mix in half the chicken pieces. Mound mixture in 13×9x2-inch glass baking dish.
5. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake macaroni uncovered until heated through, about 25 minutes.
6. Meanwhile, stir hot pepper sauce and remaining 2 tablespoons butter in small saucepan over medium heat until butter melts.
7. Remove macaroni from oven and top with remaining chicken pieces, then spoon 4 tablespoons of hot pepper and butter sauce over macaroni. Bake for 5-7 more minutes.
8. Sprinkle top of macaroni with finely diced celery and more blue cheese crumbles; serve immediately, passing around extra hot pepper sauce.
